Does God See Me When Life Kicks My Butt?
We read in Scripture that God cares for the sparrows. Jesus reminds us in Matthew 10 that not one falls to the ground without the Father knowing. He even says we are worth more than many sparrows. That sounds comforting until life punches you in the gut and you find yourself gasping, “Lord, do You even see me?”
Because let’s be honest: sometimes life flat out kicks your butt. A job loss. A diagnosis. A broken relationship. The daily grind that feels heavier than it should. And in those moments, it is easy to wonder if maybe God is too busy with the big stuff. Maybe He is preoccupied with what is happening in Israel, or the war in Ukraine, or the global crises that make my problems feel small in comparison.
But here is the thing. God is not like us. He does not get spread thin. He does not need to prioritize one crisis over another. He is not so locked in on world events that He overlooks your tears at night. The same God who is sovereign over nations is tender enough to sit with you in your pain.
Still, what about when you struggle to see it? When your prayers seem to hit the ceiling? When you do not see any evidence that He is moving at all?
This is the space where faith gets gritty. It is not polished or tidy. It is the kind of faith that says, “I do not see it right now, but I am choosing to believe You are who You say You are.” Sometimes it is as small as hanging onto a single verse like a lifeline. Other times it is just whispering, “Lord, help my unbelief.”
The Bible is full of people who struggled to see God at work. Joseph sat in a prison for years before God’s plan unfolded. David spent a decade on the run, wondering when the promise of kingship would ever be fulfilled. Even the disciples spent three days thinking Jesus was gone forever. From their perspective, it looked like God was not doing anything. But He was.
The sparrows still fall. Life still hurts. Jesus never promised us a pain free ride. But He did promise presence. “I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”
So if today you feel unseen, remember this. God’s silence is not absence. His delays are not neglect. His care for sparrows is proof enough that He has not missed your tears, your questions, or your broken heart.
No, He is not too busy with the big headlines of the world. He is both the God of nations and the God who catches sparrows. And if He cares for the smallest bird, you can be sure He has not taken His eyes off you.
